Our summer camp programs provide youth with physical disabilities the opportunity to do things they never thought possible

Every summer young people with disabilities such as cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, and amputation are encouraged to unplug from the constant buzz of cell phones & computers to make genuine face-to-face connections; learn to lead healthy, active lives; discover the wonders of nature; and challenge their perceived limitations.

Just one session at camp has campers building important life, social, and wilderness skills and realizing greater independence.  Most importantly, they're having a ton of fun and making great new friends!

Camp Awakening partners with established summer camps - Kilcoo Camp for boys & Camp Oconto for girls - to offer an accessible cabin, a wide range of adapted outdoor activities, and a safe & inclusive environment.

Campers participate in both structured & free recreation activity periods daily.  These include low impact to intense physical exercise at swimming, sailing, kayaking, canoeing, archery, land sports (wheelchair basketball, sledge hockey, soccer, tennis...), challenge courses (40 foot rock walls & low ropes), and horseback riding. There are also artistic pursuits such as arts & crafts, pottery, dance and drama, as well as theme days, all-camp games, campfires, talent shows and lots & lots of fun!

A highlight for many campers is the wilderness canoe-tripping program into Ontario’s beautiful Provincial Parks for a paddling adventure where they cook over a campfire, sleep in a tent, and explore nature barrier-free.

In addition to our traditional summer camp sessions featuring the activities listed above, Camp Awakening also offers three specialty sessions:

MINI-CAMP (for our youngest or first-time campers 9-11 years).
This four-night experience is a great introduction to overnight camp and being away from home for the first time.  Very similar to our classic two-week overnight camp experience including land and water activities, without the canoe trip.

All the fun of a traditional camp session with daily parasport training and instruction. Camper will have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of sports, such as wheelchair basketball, sitting volleyball & others, throughout the one week session. Coaches will give introductions to beginners and work with experienced campers to bring their skills to the next level.

M.I.L.E.S SESSION (leadership development for campers 16-18 years).
The Motivation, Independence, Leadership, Empowerment and Skill development session is the perfect balance between the fun of summer camp and learning new life skills.  This is not a counsellor-in-training program, but rather an opportunity to develop leadership skills to benefit campers at home, at school, and in their community.
