Now in its 7th summer AND moving to a new home for 2018, the Youth Leadership Development (YLD) Retreat is a one-week, co-ed program for young adults with physical disabilities 19-24 years of age.

While we have enjoyed, and greatly benefited from, our six year partnership with March of Dimes Canada we are thrilled to be moving the program to a new home at Cedar Ridge Camp near Bancroft, Ontario and getting back to Camp Awakening’s wilderness camping philosophy.

For 2018, the YLD Retreat will return to having a strong leadership development focus. Each day, participants will partake in fun, interactive sessions with the goal of helping you increase independence; build self-confidence; make new friends; learn new skills; and set goals for the future.  We want to ensure that the sessions that we lead this summer are beneficial, and therefore we will be turning to you to see what kinds of leadership skills you want to learn. We are excited for you to help us develop this new program in a ‘choose your own adventure’ style of camp. Participants will also have the opportunity to earn a tangible leadership certificate to help with future employment and volunteer opportunities.

Participants of the YLD Retreat will also be able to engage in all of the fun activities that Cedar Ridge Camp has to offer! This will include activities such as kayaking, canoeing, sailing, swimming, horseback riding, archery, wood working, arts & crafts, dance, drama, and rock climbing. We will also be able to offer a day or overnight canoe trip!

In addition, this summer we will also be seeking two Peer Mentors to assist with the YLD Retreat. Peer Mentors must be over the age of 25, have valuable life experience they are willing to share during sessions and must have attended a previous Camp Awakening program. Peer Mentors will be able to partake in all of the fun activities of camp, but will have additional responsibilities such as assisting staff members, supporting the facilitation of leadership sessions, and helping participants.
